Wilderness is renowned as much for its tradition of hospitality,
which began as far back as the late 1800’s, as it is for its
natural beauty, vast stretches of beach, tranquillity and calm seas.
Situated 15km east of George, Wilderness stretches from the Kaaimans
River to the end of the Goukamma Nature Reserve. To the north, the
Outeniqua mountain range borders Wilderness, while the south looks
out to the Indian Ocean. The abundant wetlands, forests, mountains,
beaches, open fields and fynbos provide an ideal habitat for the
200 species of birdlife found in this area.

Whilst the idyllic beauty of Wilderness is enough of a reason
to visit the area, there is no shortage of activities and tours
to keep you entertained. You can enjoy mountain biking, whale and
dolphin watching, hang gliding, paragliding, horse riding, scenic
drives and day tours as well as an extensive network of hiking trails,
a number of popular picnic spots including the indigenous forest
at the 800-year old Woodville Big Tree, and various watersports
such as skiing, sailing, surfing and angling.

Excellent viewpoints include the Map of Africa for its breathtaking
scenery of lakes, forests, mountains and coast, Dolphin’s
Point, which is known for its whale and dolphin watching, and the
Kaaimans River Bridge.
With all these attractions coupled with the year-round temperate
climate where daytime temperatures rarely fall below 10°c, and
a well-earned reputation for hospitality, Wilderness is truly the
Garden Route’s premier holiday destination. However, if you
are just passing through, Wilderness is in close proximity to the
Garden Route landmark towns of George,
Plettenberg
Bay, Knysna,
Oudtshoorn
and Mossel
Bay.
